No. RV/17 Hogs Roll to 13-7 Win in Series Opener over ENMU

Arnold smashes first career grand slam en route to six RBI

PORTALES, N.M. – The No. RV/17 Texas A&M University-Kingsville baseball program finally saw the field for game one in a series that was adjusted continually for inclement weather and turned in convincing 13-7 win over ENMU on Saturday at Greyhound Field in the Lone Star matchup.

The Javelinas (26-8, 5-4 LSC) got a grand slam from redshirt-freshman Will Arnold (Magnolia, Texas) in a six-run second inning to spearhead the decision over the Greyhounds (16-17, 2-11 LSC).

Junior Dylan Hutcheson (Wichita Falls, Texas) opened the scoring for the Hogs as he drew a four-pitch, bases-loaded walk in the top of the second to push senior Dallas Stefano (Cypress, Texas) across the plate before Arnold drove the third pitch of his at bat over the center field wall to wipe the bases clean for a 5-0 TAMUK lead.

Senior Levi Zents (Fort Worth, Texas) tacked on another run in the frame was he roped an RBI double into right to cap redshirt-junior Alex Gonzalez (Corpus Christi, Texas) before the Hounds worked out of the inning.

ENMU chipped away at the lead in the bottom half of the stanza when Garlind Webster pushed a grounder back up the middle to bring Chris Padilla home, while Eurick Perez found a gap in right center to score Webster and Zach Shank.

Freshman Tyler Flores (San Antonio, Texas) was billed as the starter for the Blue and Gold and eventually worked out of the second with a punch out and a ground out. Flores would go on to take his fourth win of the year after scattering five hits over 6.1 innings of work with four strikeouts.

The Javelinas got the runs back in the top of the third when junior Manny Loredo (McAllen, Texas) drove a pitch back up the middle to score junior Pablo Hernandez (Havana, Cuba), while Arnold posted his fifth RBI of the day with a liner to center to score Loredo later in the frame.

Arnold finished his 3-for-4, six-RBI day with a run-scoring single to right center in the fifth to bring Hutcheson home for a 9-3 TAMUK lead.

The hosts turned up the heat in the seventh after loading the bases with one out and getting a run home on a free pass to Julian Heredia, but redshirt-senior Trey Taylor (Leander, Texas) came in relief for the Hogs after Flores got the hook and sat down the next two batters on strikes to prevent any further damage.

The Javelinas were in cruise control from that point, tallying two more runs behind a double from Zents and a single from freshman Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) in the eighth before a pair of insurance runs crossed in the ninth after Arnold scored on an ENMU miscue coupled with a sacrifice fly from senior Austin Ingraham (Fort Worth, Texas) to set the total at 13.

The Hounds added two in the eight before senior Jarred Taylor (Vidor, Texas) took over in the final at bat and retired the hosts in order for the 13-7 final.

The Hogs will have a doubleheader with the Greyhounds on Sunday, April 15, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. CT at Greyhound Field.
