COMMERCE, Texas – Mariah Jameyson collected three hits, including a home run, and the Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team was dealt a 5-2 loss by the No. 9 Texas A&M-Commerce Lions on Friday night in Commerce, Texas at the John Cain Family Softball Complex.
The Javelinas now own a record of 17-16 overall and are 7-9 in the Lone Star Conference. Commerce has now won 10-in-a-row and they are 26-3 with an LSC mark of 11-2.
The first run of the game came across in the 2nd when Jameyson led-off with a single against sophomore Breanna Smith (Hallettsville, Texas) (10-10) and Monica Cherry drove her in with a triple.
Commerce built on their lead in the fourth, another frame that began with a hit from Jameyson. This time, the senior smacked her league-leading 13th home run to make the score 2-0. Four batters later, with Cherry on first, Jode Hill went deep and the Lions had provided starter Katie Dean (11-1) with a four-run advantage.
The first Javelina run crossed the plate in the fifth. Junior Lauren Oatman (Fort Worth, Texas) started the frame with a double and moved to third when Rachael Longoria (Hutto, Texas) singled. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, junior Delila Gillespie (San Antonio, Texas) punched a pinch-hit single through the left side to plate her team's first run. Jameyson provided another answer for the Lions, however, with a run-scoring double in the bottom of the fifth.
Kingsville again moved to within three runs in the sixth, as junior Victoria Schoonard-Saborio began the inning with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Roxy Chapa (McAllen, Texas). Another chance for TAMUK presented itself in the seventh. A hit batter and two walks put runners on every base with nobody out, but the Javs were unable to take advantage. Graduate student Ileana Aleman (Pharr, Texas), bounced into a double play and freshman Loren Kelly (Rockport, Texas) fouled out to end the game.
These two teams will reacquaint themselves on Saturday for a doubleheader, with games scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. To keep up with the Javelinas all season long, visit Javelinaathletics.com, follow @TAMUKSB on Twitter, like /JavelinaSports on Facebook and subscribe to the Javelina athletics YouTube channel.
