ODESSA, Texas – The Texas A&M University-Kingsville baseball program plated seven runs in the top of the ninth inning to claim a 13-6 win over UT Permian Basin on Friday at Roden Field.
The Javelinas (9-2) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the sixth, but the Falcons (2-11) matched the total in the bottom of the eighth to set the stage for the late game heroics.
Austin Ingraham started the sixth-inning rally with his RBI single to center field to plate
Christian Caudle, before
Travis Geiser brought in two with his liner to center that capped Ingraham and
Pablo Hernandez.
Levi Zents added another run to TAMUK's total with his RBI groundout to first base that scored Geiser, while
Alex Gonzalez sent a grounder through the left side to plate
Dallas Stefano.
Manny Loredo put the exclamation point on the inning with a hard shot into right field to score Gonzalez and gave the Javelinas a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the frame.
The Falcons failed to get a runner past first base on
Preston Plovanich as the Santa Fe, Texas, native went seven innings of one-hit ball and retired five on strikes for the no-decision.
UTPB cut into the lead in the eighth inning after Chris Ortega's base-clearing double to left field to cap three and came home on a Mike Fernandez single through the left side. Alex Wixson ended up knotting the score at six apiece with a two-run double to center.
The Hogs loaded the bases to start the top of the ninth after Hernandez led off with a single and stole second, while Ingraham was hit by a pitch and
Dax McCleary bunted his way aboard to force the Falcons into a pitching change.
Stefano drew a five-pitch walk to plate Hernandez, Zents ended up on base after getting hit by pitch to bring in Ingraham, and Gonzalez drew a five-pitch walk to cap McCleary to prompt another pitching change.
Zents and Stefano ended up crossing the plate on an throwing error by the pitcher off a grounder from
Kohl Ullman, while Ingraham set the line score at 13-6 with a two-run double to left.
Seth Hubert pitched a perfect ninth for his third win of the season.
The Javelinas will continue the four-game slate against UTPB with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 3, starting at 1 p.m. at Roden Field.
