Seniors sent out with win over Greyhounds

Javelinas come back from down 10 to steal win in OT

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Angelica Wilson penned one more chapter in a fantastic senior season by tallying 15 points and 17 rebounds and the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team sent their seniors off with a 69-62 overtime victory over the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds on Saturday at the Steinke Physical Education Center in Kingsville, Texas.

The Javelinas finish the 2017-18 season with a record of 8-20 overall and 5-15 in the Lone Star Conference.

Wilson finishes the year with averages of 11.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. She's the first Javelina to average a double-double for the season since Arie Wilson in 2002-03. Wilson completes her career in Blue and Gold with an average of 8.3 rebounds per game, the seventh-highest figure in program history.

Wilson and her teammates earned this victory by outlasting the Greyhounds in overtime after 40 minutes of frenetic basketball. In the extra period, Sadie Russell began the scoring with a jumper, but Daeshi McCants put the visitors in front with a three. Brynae Thompson restored TAMUK to the lead with a jumper, only to have Mikaehla Connor responded with a layup. Wilson came back with two foul shots and Russell, who would finish with 14 points, added two more for a 63-60 lead. The teams exchanged free throws before Thompson hit two more from the charity stripe. She would end the night with a game-high 17. Wilson tacked on the final two points to secure the victory.

The Javelinas and Greyhounds played even basketball for the first 10 minutes before ENMU scored six straight points to take a 19-13 lead. The spurt consisted of three-point plays by Alvia Lewis and Dasia Johnson. Kingsville came back with eight straight points, a rally that included Thompson converting a three-point play to tie the game and Antoinette Shrepee sinking to free throws for the lead. Eastern New Mexico eventually evened things at 23 thanks to a trey from Brandi Gomez and, after another bucket by Thompson, they tallied eight straight points for a 31-25 lead, but the Javs cut that deficit to one before halftime.

Neither side could gain a significant edge in the third quarter until, with 3:42 remaining, Amari Joseph scored a layup and followed it with a three-pointer for a 46-41 advantage. The Greyhounds would take a 47-42 lead into the final quarter and they immediately built on it with a Kaylee Edgemon layup and a trey by Brandi Gomez for the game's largest lead, 10 points. TAMUK spent the rest of the quarter whittling that lead down.

Russell started the comeback with a free throw and Wilson connected on a jumper. McCants put her team back up by nine, but two Wilson free throws sliced it back to seven. Russell and Wilson then both added two more, putting the score at 54-51 with 4:37 to play. Shrepee moved the Hoggies to with one by hitting a layup and one McCants foul shot put Eastern's lead at two with 3:01 left. For more than two minutes, neither side could find twine. Finally, with 28 seconds left, Antoinette Shrepee grabbed an offensive rebound and put the ball through to tie the game at 55 and send the game to overtime.
