KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball program fell to regional foe St. Mary's on Tuesday at the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center, as the visitors used the deep ball Tuesday evening to come away with a 67-49 decision.
"You have to give a lot of credit to St. Mary's," said head coach
Wade Scott. "They came in here and made plays, they shot the ball tremendously well tonight, and they were the more aggressive team. I thought we got a bit passive and that affected us."
The Javelinas (1-2) held the Rattlers (2-1) to a 27.3% shooting mark from the floor in the second half, but couldn't overcome 12 made three-pointers as the visitors took the win.
The two squads traded buckets in the early goings of the first quarter with the Javelinas owning a slight edge at 10-9 at the 4:25 mark behind a trey from junior
Victoria Salinas (Corpus Christi, Texas).
The Rattlers pulled off a run to close the quarter, taking 11 of the next 15 points for a 20-14 cushion going into the second, capped off by a jumper from Crystal Jumper just past the minute mark.
StMU extended the lead from that point, getting to a 45-23 advantage by halftime courtesy of seven made shots from beyond the arc, while TAMUK was held to a 23.1% mark from the field to fall behind by 22.
The visitors kept the point differential in the double digits throughout the third quarter, owning a 26-point lead at one point before the hosts closed out the stanza with driving layups from sophomore
Bri-Anna Soliz (San Angelo, Texas) and junior
Danielle Meador (Corpus Christi, Texas) to set the line score at 57-35 favoring St. Mary's going into the final frame.
The Javelinas got as close at 62-47 late in the fourth, but the lead proved insurmountable as the Rattlers eventually won out at 67-49.
Junior
Brynae Thompson (Houston, Texas) led all scorers with 17 points behind 6-for-10 shooting from the floor to go with three rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Senior transfer
Cloe Lane (Kansas City, Mo.) added 11 points and six boards on a 5-for-12 mark from the field alongside one assist, block and steal in the contest. She was matched on rebounds by Soliz, who added six of her own on the evening.
The Javelinas' next action will be back home against Texas A&M International next week. The doubleheader will feature the Javelina men's team starting on Tuesday, November 20, with tip off set for 5:30 p.m. CT at the SPEC.
