Box Score COMMERCE, Texas – Despite Victoria Salinas and Tatyana McFarland each reaching double figures with 12 points apiece, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team was unable to get past the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions, suffering a 63-48 setback on Thursday night at The Field House in Commerce, Texas.
The Javelinas (3-10, 0-5) set a new season-high by shooting 40% from the field. This also marks the second time in the three games TAMUK has had multiple players in double figures.
FIRST QUARTER
Victoria Salinas quickly got the Javs on the board with a trey before buckets by Princess Davis and Artaejah Gay gave Commerce (7-5, 4-1) a slim lead. After the teams traded buckets twice, a pair of free throws put TAMUK ahead 9-8. The Lions moved back in front thanks to a layup by Gay, but Shaq Debose answered with a three-pointer. Two foul shots by Davis evened things at 12 before the quarter ended.
SECOND QUARTER
A 6-0 run by the home team that included two layups by Gay enabled Commerce to take a six-point edge and another Gay basket after an Angelica Wilson bucket pushed the lead back to a half-dozen. Each side hit a triple, with Salinas providing the three for TAMUK, and Wilson moved the Javelinas to within four by swishing a pair from the charity stripe. Antoinette Shrepee's first two points of the night put the score at 23-21, only for six points in-a-row by the Lions to stretch their lead to eight.
Salinas stopped TAMUC's rally with a jumper and Emmeri Archer contributed a pair soon after. Ransom responded with her second three of the game and after adding one more foul shot, Commerce headed to the half ahead 33-25.
THIRD QUARTER
Staunch defense prevented either team from scoring in the opening two minutes of the second half before each side knocked down a pair of shots to move the score to 37-29. Kristina Kana's layup brought the visitors back to within five, but consecutive threes by the Lions gave them a 12-point cushion with 3:49 to play in the period.
Tatyana McFarland was able to chip away at that lead by first converting a three-point play and adding a layup 80 seconds later, but another response came from Commerce in the form of four straight points to close the quarter with the scoreboard reading Lions 47, Javelinas 36.
FOURTH QUARTER
The first three points of the final quarter came on a layup by Salinas and a free throw by McFarland before Wise dropped in two from the foul line. A three by Jenna Price then put Commerce ahead by 13 and that lead soon grew to 18. Madison Crawford and Wilson hit consecutive buckets for the Javelinas, making the score 59-45 before the Lions added four points of their own. McFarland closed out the scoring with a three-point play in the final minute.
The Javelinas will have Friday off before they travel to Stephenville to take on Tarleton State on Saturday. The Texans and Hoggies will square off at 2 p.m. To receive content for Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball, you can follow @TAMUKWBB on Twitter and Instagram, like the official Facebook page of Javelina athletics (/JavelinaSports) and subscribe to the Javelina Athletics YouTube channel.
