Javelinas Fall to Greyhounds in Overtime Heartbreaker

Wilson, Russell Hit Double Figures in Points, Rebounds

PORTALES, N.M. – Angelica Wilson set a season-high with 18 points and also totaled 13 rebounds while Sadie Russell pulled in 10 boards to go with 11 points as the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team dropped an overtime nail-biter to Eastern New Mexico, 67-61, on Thursday afternoon in Portales, N.M. at Greyhound Arena.

This marks the second time this season two Javelinas have totaled a double-double in the same game, as Wilson and Tatyana McFarland turned the trick against Texas A&M International on Nov. 18th. For Russell, her 10 rebounds matched a season-best. Shaq Debose set a new season-high with five assists.

 FIRST QUARTER

Both teams quickly got on the scoreboard in the opening minutes, with a three-pointer by Daeshi McCants giving the Greyhounds an early 5-4 lead. Victoria Salinas responded with a trey of her own for TAMUK and Dasia Johnson tied the score with a jumper. Six straight points pushed the Javelinas in front 13-7, but McCants sliced that lead in half with her second long distance bucket and soon added a jump shot to bring ENMU within one. Each sided tacked on a pair before Kaylee Edgemon hit a layup and Brandi Gomez connected from three-point land, ending the first 10 minutes with the home team up by four.

SECOND QUARTER

Five straight points by the Greyhounds upped the score to 24-15 before a layup by Antoinette Shrepee brought the Hoggies to within seven. Free throws by both teams added to the score, with the Javelinas collecting five points and the Greyhounds scoring twice. A jumper by Emmeri Archer was answered by a three from Jasmine Hotchkin and a Sarina Johnson layup put ENMU ahead, 31-24. A foul shot by Debose brought the Javelinas to within five and Shrepee canned a jumper just before the buzzer, sending the schools to the locker room with the score at 31-27.

THIRD QUARTER

Russell immediately brought the Javs to within two with a jumper and Wilson tied the game at 31 two minutes later. The TAMUK defense continued to stifle ENMU and with 4:33 to play in the quarter, a bucket by Shrepee put the visitors ahead. The Greyhounds came back with four straight points, retaking the lead when Edgemon hit a jump shot.

Two more courtesy of Edgemon made the score 37-34, but Wilson cut the deficit to two with a pair from the charity stripe. The senior then hit from the floor and each side traded triples to keep the Javs in front by a point. Alivia Lewis put the hosts on top with two free throws and the final period began with the scoreboard reading Greyhounds 42, Javelinas 41.

FOURTH QUARTER

Two foul shots by Wilson moved the Hoggies ahead in first minute of the fourth and Archer tacked on two with a layup. McCants brought Eastern New Mexico within one and each team hit two from the foul line, making the score 47-46. Three points from Mikaehla Connor pushed the home side back into the lead and after McFarland tied the score, a layup from Connor with 4:19 provided ENMU with a slim, 51-49 edge.

Both teams scored once to remain two points apart before Russell tied the score with 1:36 to play. McCants restored her team's two-point lead, but a jumper by Wilson with 11 seconds remaining put both sides at 55 and sent the game to overtime.

OVERTIME

The Greyhouds scored eight of the first nine points in the extra period. Debose carried TAMUK to within four with a three-point play with 46 seconds left, but free throws ENMU secured the final margin.

The Javelinas don't have much time before they're back on the court again. They'll tussle with Western New Mexico on Saturday at 3 p.m. For complete coverage, visit Javelinaathletics.com.
