SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Baseball) – #RV Texas A&M University-Kingsville (18-8) were 90 feet away from sweeping the season series over St. Mary's University (13-17) but the Rattlers salvaged the final game of the regular season series Friday evening at Dickson Stadium. The Javelinas took game one 5-2 before falling 5-4 in the finale.
GAME ONE
Levi Zents went 2-for-3 with two RBI and
Pablo Hernandez drilled two doubles for four of A&M-Kingsville's seven hits, while
Seth Hubert went the distance in a 5-2 victory over the Rattlers. The win extended the Javelina win streak to seven.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hubert matched StMU starter Chris Jones with zeros in the first and second innings. Leading off the third with a double,
Alec Kana scored on
Joshua Croft's sacrifice fly, putting Kingsville on the board first. The Hogs tacked onto their lead with two runs in the fourth on Zents' two-run single down the right field line.
St. Mary's got one back in the bottom of the inning but small ball factored into a run for TAMUK in the fifth on
Christian Caudle's RBI base knock.
The Rattlers made it a two-run ballgame with a run in the bottom frame and the Javelinas took a three-run lead on
Alex Gonzalez's RBI after Zents and Hernandez began the inning with back-to-back hits.
WIN-LOSS RECORD
Hubert needed just 81 pitches for the complete game victory, improving to 5-1 with three strikeouts. The right-hander got himself out of trouble often, limiting the Rattlers to 3-of-13 hitting with runners on. Jones (2-3) received the loss in the complete game after giving up seven hits and five runs – three earned.
GAME TWO
Zents went 3-for-4 in game two and Roche went yard to finish with two RBI. Hernandez added his third double of the afternoon and
Kohl Ullman legged out his first career triple. The Javelinas put the tying run on third but fell just short of the comeback, 5-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Isaiah Lybarger allowed three runs in 6.0 innings and was in line to get the victory as Texas A&M-Kingsville led 3-1 prior to the bottom of the seventh.
A three-run third put the Hogs in front 3-0 as Ullman led off the inning with a triple, Croft followed with an RBI single and Roche homered to right field.
StMU scored a run in the bottom of the fourth and that was all until the seventh, when the Rattlers tacked on three runs on three hits to take a 4-3 lead.
The comeback began in the eighth and took just one inning as
Tim Gleinser, who pinch ran for Caudle, was plated on Hernandez's double to left field to knot it up at 4-4.
St. Mary's regained the lead in the eighth on a after a walk/stolen base put Javier Camacho in scoring position and a base knock allowed him to come home.
Ullman walked in the ninth and advanced on a passed ball. Tagging up on Roche's flyout, the shortstop was 90 feet away from tying the game once again. However, the Rattlers were able to escape unscathed and take the final game, 5-4.
WIN-LOSS RECORD
Hayden Hibler struck out five and allowed three runs in 7.0 innings of work but received the no-decision. Lybarger punched out two in 6.0 innings but also did not factor in the decision. Trent Rousseau (2-1) picked up the victory in 2.0 innings of work while
Trey Taylor fell to 0-2 on the year.
