ALLEN, Texas (Women's Basketball) – The slipper was Blue and Gold Thursday evening as Texas A&M University-Kingsville (14-13) pulled off the first No. 8 over No. 1 stunner at the Allen Event Center with a 69-67 overtime victory over #RV and top seed Eastern New Mexico University (23-5).
The victory is the first in the LSC Tournament since Feb. 27, 2001 when the Javs defeated Northeastern State University 70-57. The Javelinas advance to the semifinals and will take on the winner of the Texas A&M University-Commerce/Tarleton State University game Saturday at 6 p.m. It is the first No. 8 over No. 1 upset since moving to a neutral site location.
Live stats, audio and video will be available.
Kevin Piel and
Kelvin Queliz will bring you the action, beginning with the pregame show at 5:45 p.m.
Kaylin Roher was 8-of-10 from the charity stripe and finished with a game-high 20 points.
Angelica Wilson posted a career-high 15 points to go with her two blocked shots and nine rebounds and
Shaq Debose added 10 points off the bench. Despite shooting just 29.9 percent from the floor and being outrebounded by 10, the Javelina defense and clutch free throw shooting led to the back-to-back victories over the Greyhounds.
The key defensive stops were no bigger than the two charges taken by
Kaylee Kana.
FIRST QUARTER
Eastern New Mexico dominated the rebounds 15-4 but A&M-Kingsville trailed by just one after the opening period, 14-13. Debose came off the bench to provide most of the punch, scoring eight points on 3-of-5 shooting.
SECOND QUARTER
Trading points early in the period, Roher's up and under at the 7:37 mark was a beauty as the clock was stopped for an equipment readjustment for ENMU.
The game was tied at 24-24 on Wilson's and-one as the bench continued to lead the club offensively.
At the half, the Javelinas trailed 28-25 with 20 points coming from the second unit. Debose ended the half with eight points on 3-of-6 shooting and Wilson added six points and three rebounds.
Despite being outrebounded 27-16, TAMUK held the Greyhounds to 39 percent shooting and within one possession.
THIRD QUARTER
The defense continued to keep the Javelinas within striking distance but with one field goal in eight minutes of action (including first half), A&M-Kingsville trailed 33-30 with 6:55 remaining.
Debose's transition floater made her the first to reach double figures as the guard's 10
th point made it a one-point ballgame in favor of ENMU with 5:56 left to play.
Moments later,
Emmeri Archer's fake got the Greyhound defender on her feet and the bucket led to an and-one opportunity with the game tied again, this time at 36 with 2:44 remaining in the third.
On the defensive stance,
Ope Ibrahim garnered a swipe and Wilson was rewarded for her efforts on the offensive glass, sinking both free throws to give TAMUK a 38-36 lead with 2:06 left and first lead overall since the 7:37 mark of the second period.
After forcing another turnover defensively, A&M-Kingsville picked up another and-one, the second for Jelly to put her in double figures (11 points). The lead was the largest of the game for TAMUK as the Blue and Gold was up 41-36 with 1:32 remaining.
The second technical of the game was called on Kingsville with 41.6 seconds remaining and Brandi Gomez connected on the second from the charity stripe to tie the game at 41.
Ibrahim's free throws in the closing seconds put the Hogs ahead by two but Gomez was clutch again with a triple to regain the lead for ENMU by one.
With 3.6 ticks remaining in the period, Roher drove to the hoop and picked up the foul, heading to the line for two. K-Ro hit the first to tie the game at 44 – the ninth tie of the game – and the second fell through off the front of the rim to give TAMUK a 45-44 lead after three.
FOURTH PERIOD
The game was tied at 48 with 7:53 remaining after a ball that looked to hit off a Greyhound defender was ruled to be off TAMUK, leading to free throws for the No. 1 seeded ENMU.
A 7-0 run in just 1:20 put the Hounds in front by five with 6:58 left. The Javelinas ended the run on a fadeaway by Kana. Jelly came up with a steal on the defensive end to give Kingsville a chance to tie it as Kana went for the dagger from behind-the-arc. A foul called on ENMU gave TAMUK a third opportunity to score on the possession and they did off the inbounds pass to Kana, cutting it to one.
The defense continued to stand tall with an emphatic swat by Wilson and
Tee Moore at the 5:08 mark. Wilson collected her seventh rebound and Kana was fouled to head to the line looking to put TAMUK ahead with 4:41 left.
After the ENMU lead extended to three, Jelly tied her career-high in back-to-back games against the same opponent, with her fourth field goal cutting the Greyhound lead to one.
An Eastern turnover with 2:52 remaining put the Javs in the driver's seat but a tipped pass went in favor of the Hounds. Daeshi McCants drained a trey from straight away to give ENMU a four-point cushion, but Moore's cut led to a layup to make it a one possession game.
On the defensive end, Kana drew charge to force Eastern's 15
th turnover and give TAMUK the ball. Roher was fouled with 1:38 remaining and drained both for the game's 11
th tie.
McCants fouled out with 1:15 left to play as Kana was parked for another charge. The defense continued to be the story with Moore picking up a huge block and Debose was fouled with 10.4 seconds to head to the line. Unfortunately, Shaq missed both but TAMUK had one more opportunity to put the nail in the coffin in regulation, advancing the ball to midcourt with 1.1 seconds.
The close one between No. 8 TAMUK and No. 1 ENMU could not be decided in 40 minutes as the Allen Event Center was treated to its second consecutive overtime contest.
OVERTIME
Moore began OT with an old fashioned three-point play to begin extra time with a three-point lead for the Hogs.
Moments later, Roher followed with a corner triple off the Kana pass to put Kingsville ahead by four. Defensively, Moore and Kana double teamed Connor to force another ENMU turnover with 3:05 left.
It was a one-point ballgame in favor of the Javelinas with 55.8 seconds remaining before a Greyhound timeout. The team stance led to Eastern's 17
th turnover with 43 ticks left to play.
Roher hit the first of two free throws to extend the lead to two with 20 seconds left. Connor came out of the timeout and dribbled off her foot, giving TAMUK the ball with 9.0 seconds remaining.
With 6.9 left, Roher made two clutch free throws as Kingsville completed the upset as the Hogs moved ahead to Saturday.
