KINGSVILLE, Texas (Women's Basketball) – The Texas A&M University-Kingsville women's basketball team (12-12, 7-11 LSC) took the court following the marathon men's basketball classic and swept the University of Texas of the Permian Basin (7-18, 3-15 LSC), 63-59, Saturday afternoon in the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
Saturday was senior day and the annual #Play4Kay contest for women's hoops. At halftime of the men's game,
Kaylin Roher,
Meesha Wade,
Joslyn Smith,
Kaylee Kana,
Lily Hospers and
Tee Moore were honored for their contributions to the women's basketball program.
Roher and Moore each finished with 16 points and
Angelica Wilson posted her first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.
Shaq Debose played in 35 minutes, scoring eight points and dishing out four assists.
The victory keeps the Javelinas in the No. 8 spot in the Lone Star Conference standings, two games ahead of Midwestern State University. With another victory OR a MSU loss, the Hogs will clinch a playoff spot.
FIRST PERIOD
The Javelinas took a 14-13 lead through the first on 10 points inside the paint. In her first start of the season, Debose swiped two passes in the first.
SECOND PERIOD
Moore recorded seven points at the 4:59 mark of the second period and held a 21-20 lead. She finished the first half with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting and Hospers added four points and four rebounds as A&M-Kingsville led 28-27.
THIRD PERIOD
The back-and-forth continued in the second half and UTPB was able to take a one-point lead into the fourth behind Briana Caro's 19 points and seven rebounds. Moore challenged Caro with much of the Javelina offense, scoring 14 points and adding two steals through the first 30 minutes.
FOURTH PERIOD
Down one with 8:52 remaining, Wilson scored to regain the one-point edge for A&M-Kingsville. After a UTPB bucket, Roher reached double figures with her 10
th point of the game. Moments later, Wilson's free throw and Hospers' layup at the 6:04 mark made it a two-point ballgame in favor of the Hogs. Roher continued the run with a corner triple to extend the lead to five with 5:15 left. All in all, the run was 11-2 after another dagger by Roher.
