SAN ANGELO, Texas (Softball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (3-5, 0-3 LSC) fell in both games of this afternoons doubleheader with #22 Angelo State University (13-1, 3-0 LSC) 4-0 and 7-6 on Saturday at Mayer Field.
Texas A&M-Kingsville had a difficult time at the plate in Saturday's pair of games. Rachael Longoria had two hits in the doubleheader and four RBI's to lead the team, thanks to a grand slam in game two that tied the clubs at four runs a piece. Alexei Gonzalez, Haley Boyett, Randa Hatter, Roxy Chapa, Delila Gillespie and Sydney Andrews all recorded one hit on day two verses Angelo State. Carlie Clark and Breanna Smith both pitched complete games but combined for just four strikeouts and gave up four home runs.
Game 1
Angelo State put a run on the board first with a home run from Karina Rocha—her second of the series—in the bottom of the second inning. Two innings later, after two athletes reached on a walk and fielder's choice, Danae Bina singled through left field and capitalized on a fielding error to cross three runners—one unearned—extending the Belles lead 4-0.
Longoria broke up the no-no in the top of the seventh inning but the Hogs was shut out 4-0 in the first of two games. Clark (0-1) dropped her first game of the season after allowing just two hits in a complete game, and earned two of the four Belle runs. Kenedy Urbany (4-0) tossed all seven innings with ten putouts to keep a clean record.
Game 2
The Rambelles kept the momentum rolling from game one by jumping out to a 4-0 lead through four innings, highlighted by a three-run homer from Taegan Kirk in the bottom of the third.
In the top of fifth inning, the Javs exploded after Longoria blasted a grand slam to tie the game at four. Boyett was walked following the HR and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Chapa brought the junior home on a single to center field and Hatter doubled to left center to score Andrews who pinch ran for Chapa to help TAMUK take a 6-4 lead.
Unfortunately, ASU went long in back-to-back innings from Rocha in the bottom of the fifth for her second homer of the afternoon, and Urbany who plated two in the sixth inning, that ultimately completed the series sweep with a 7-6 win in game two.
Smith falls to 1-2 in the circle this season in her first complete game where she threw three strikeouts. Brandy Marlett (6-1) notched her second win of the series after throwing eight K's and a gave up a grand slam in 4.1 innings.
The Javelinas will be back in action this Tuesday in a double-dip at Texas A&M International University. The first pitch will be thrown at 12 p.m.
