CHADRON, Neb. –
Victoria Salinas scored 11 points off the bench and the Javelinas pulled down 39 rebounds, but the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker to the Chadron State Eagles (2-0) 57-56 at the Chicone Center in Chadron, Neb. on Saturday night.
Tatyana McFarland also pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds
FIRST QUARTER
The Eagles scored 15 of the contest's first 21 points, fueled by four points from Jessica Harvey and two baskets from Keeley Pearce. The Javelinas battled back to move within one thanks to a pair of made shots from McFarland and buckets by
Emmeri Archer and
Jaiton Walls. The Javelinas added a free throw and ended the first quarter tied with Chadron State at 15.
SECOND QUARTER
The Hogs jumped in front to begin the second half on a jump shot by
Antoinette Sherpee, but Pearce canned a three to put Chadron up by one. Buckets by
Madison Crawford and Sherpee put TAMUK back in front, but Pearce splashed another trey for a 23-21 edge for the Eagles.
The Javs responded with a 7-0 run, fueled by five points from Salinas, including a triple, putting them in front by five and, going into halftime, they held a four-point edge.
THIRD QUARTER
Five straight points by the Eagles to begin the third period put them in front and they put up 12 of the quarters first 15 points to make the score 38-33. Kingsville then proceeded to even the score thanks to a pair of free throws by Crawford and a three-pointer courtesy of Salinas.
After the home team moved ahead by two,
Shaq DeBose and McFarland contributed two for a two-point lead and, less than a minute later, McFarland added two more for a 44-42 lead, but a bucket from downtown by Feddersen allowed Chadron State to end the quarter with a lead.
FOURTH QUARTER
A layup by
Angelica Wilson put the Hoggies up early in the final quarter and Salinas added a three a minute later for a 51-48 advantage. After the hosts went up by one, five foul shots, including two by Walls, allowed Kingsville to vault in front, 56-52.
Unfortunately for TAMUK, the lead would not hold. Two foul shots by Jessica Harvey and Kalli Feddersen evened things at 56 and Savannah Weidauer hit one more free throw, which would prove to be the difference in the game.
On Tuesday, TAMUK will take the court in San Antonio to battle the St. Mary's Rattlers. The opening tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
