Women's Basketball Falls in Season Opener to Black Hills State

Kana and Debose Tie for Team Lead in Scoring

Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D. – Kristina Kana and Shaq Debose each scored a team-high seven points and the Javelina bench contributed 25 points as the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team dropped a 66-41 decision to the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets on Friday night at the Donald E. Young Center in Spearfish, S.D.

The Hoggies outrebounded their hosts, 42-36 and also collected a pair of blocks.

FIRST QUARTER
The Javelinas began the night with a bucket from Brynae Thompson and a pair of free throws from Sadie Russell and the score stood at 4-4 almost halfway through the first period. The Yellow Jackets seized the initiative, however, going on an 8-1 run fueled by three-pointers from Abby Switzer and Julia Seamans.

Three points from Thompson brought the Javs to within four, but the Yellow Jackets then tacked on ten straight and led by 14 at the end of the first 10 minutes.

SECOND QUARTER
The second quarter began with TAMUK finding the range. Ope Ibrahim hit a layup and Debose and Russell contributed jumpers to make the score 22-15, but Black Hills State provided an answer. Alyssia Martinez knocked down a jump shot, then connected from beyond the arc and Rebecca Stevenson added a layup to give the home team a 14-point edge halfway through the second quarter.

The Javs put up a 6-0 burst to move within eight, but the Yellow Jackets closed the half on an 8-2 run to take a 37-23 advantage into halftime.

THIRD QUARTER
Russell hit the first jumper of the second half to cut her team's deficit to 12, only to see the home team pour in 15 of the next 17 points, getting scored from seven players in the process. A free throw from Antoinette Shrepee and a basket from Emmeri Archer put the score after three quarters at 52-30.

FOURTH QUARTER
Kana canned a jumper to begin the final 10 minutes, but seven points from Rachel Erickson moved BHSU in front by 26. Kana put in a free throw and Ibrahim made a layup for TAMUK to make the score 59-35 with seven minutes to go in the quarter. After seven more points by the Yellow Jackets, Kana nailed consecutive shots and Jaiton Walls also got on the scoresheet with a layup two minutes later to close out the scoring.

The Javelinas will be back on the court on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. visiting Chadron State. For a live stats and a recap and javelinaathletics.com.
