TexAnns Escape with Overtime Victory

Roher finished with 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting from three-point range

KINGSVILLE, Texas (Women's Basketball) – It was an entertaining Saturday afternoon that featured 10 lead changes, a $200 giveaway at halftime courtesy of D'yan Lopez Insurance and a buzzer beater. Unfortunately, the Javelinas could not force a second overtime on a last second shot as Tarleton State University (5-7, 4-2 LSC) escaped the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court with a 62-59 victory over Texas A&M University-Kingsville (7-5, 2-4 LSC).

Kaylin Roher finished with a team-high 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting from three-point range and Lily Hospers pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds to go with her two blocked shots. Tee Moore and Meesha Wade combined for 24 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Kaylee Kana recorded 10 rebounds.

WHAT HEAD COACH WADE SCOTT SAID
ABOUT THE BACK AND FORTH…
"We looked sluggish in the first half and Tarleton State played well but we were able to rally back late in regulation. Tarleton hit a tough contested shot and carried the momentum into overtime."

THREE-POINTERS
"We took good shots and were shot a good percentage from behind-the-arc."

FIRST PERIOD
The Javelinas came out hot, shooting 5-of-8 from the field en route to an 11-4 lead. The period ended with the Hogs lead 15-12. Hospers pulled down five rebounds and Roher dished out three assists and swiped two passes.

SECOND PERIOD
Tarleton State began the quarter 4-of-9 to take a 23-19 lead with 4:45 left to play, but an and-one by Essence Sauls made it a one possession ballgame.

Offensive, both teams struggled in the first half with the TexAnns taking a 28-22 lead into the halftime break.

THIRD PERIOD
The Javelina defense continued to force tough Tarleton shots and offensively, the Hogs went on a 9-0 run to take a one-point lead, 31-30, with 2:15 remaining. During the rally, Wade scored six of TAMUK's points. Ope Ibrahim swatted away a last second heave by the TexAnns as the third period came to a close with the Javelinas trailing 34-31. Hospers collected 13 rebounds and two blocked shots in 20 minutes of action heading into the fourth.

FOURTH PERIOD
Trailing by four with 6:53 left to play, Roher and Moore went back-to-back as Roher drained a triple and Moore's jumper at the 5:40 mark allowed Kingsville to regain the lead, 41-40.

Mackenzie Hailey responded with a three-pointer of her own but Roher dialed up another from long distance for her 11th point of the game, giving A&M-Kingsville a 44-43 lead with 4:36 remaining.

Down one, Wade went to the line and connected on both free throws to put the Hogs back in front by one for her ninth and 10th points of the game. With Tarleton inbounding, Wade pressed and picked up  her second steal, which led to Roher's fourth three-pointer of the game, extending the Kingsville lead to four with 2:28 left to play.

Tied with 6.2 seconds remaining, Moore showcased her range with a corner triple, putting the Hogs in front 52-49. Hailey forced overtime with a three at the buzzer that tied the game at 52-52.

OVERTIME
Both teams traded points before Roher's corner three with 2:18 left put Kingsville up by three. It was the senior's fifth three-pointer of the game and the Hoggies' seventh overall. TSU responded with five unanswered to take a one-point lead with 1:16 remaining.

Tarleton State escaped Kingsville with the 62-59 victory.
