Four-Run Fourth Highlights Walk-Off Win over No. 9/6 CMU

The Javelinas jacked three home runs in the fourth inning and eliminated top seed Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (Baseball) –
The resiliency was in full display Friday afternoon at Sam Suplizio Field as No. 25 Texas A&M University-Kingvsille (35-18) rallied from behind to eliminate No. 9/6 Colorado Mesa University (43-13) in walk off fashion, 7-6. The fifth-seeded Javelinas advance with a victory over the top seeded Mavericks and their opponent is to be determined.

Down 3-0 in the fourth, Brayton Carlson and Hayden Vesely went back-to-back to cut TAMUK's deficit to one, and after single by Ruben Almauger, Jimmy Roche blasted his second home run of the regional tournament to give the Hogs a 4-3 edge.

Innings later with the game tied at 6-6, Dalton Perry singled with one out in the ninth and came around to score the winning run on Vesely's single and an error in right field to cap off an 11-hit performance for the Javelinas. Hunter Lehman came out of the bullpen with 3.0 scoreless innings and two strikeouts to improve to 4-1, while Mavericks closer Nick Borowski fell to 6-3 after allowing two runs – one earned – in 3.2 innings.

Colorado Mesa began the game with small ball, advancing the leadoff hitter Alex Fife on a sacrifice to second. Fife moved over to third on a passed ball and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Contreras, giving the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.

A double down the right field line and an RBI single that just stayed fair near the third base line extended CMU's lead to 2-0 in the second. Sebi Palacios was able to induce a ground out to Roche for the final out of the top half of the second as Mesa stranded the bases juiced.

Colorado Mesa was able to tack on a run in the third for a 3-0 lead.

Palacios went 3.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out two.

Entering the fourth inning, Jako Kelm was summoned from the bullpen and tossed a scoreless top half of the inning. The Javelina offense exploded for a big inning, highlighted by four runs on three home runs to take a 4-3 lead. Carlson and Vesely went back-to-back to begin the frame and after a Almaguer single, Roche cleared the fence for the second time in as many days to give the Hogs a 4-3 lead.

The Mavericks were able to load the bases on walks and a bunt single in the top of the fifth and Trey Taylor entered with the game tied at 4-4 with one out and the bases juiced. Mesa regained the lead on a two-run single by Zach McLeod, 6-4. A groundout with the bases loaded ended the frame with the Javelinas trailing 6-4.

Kelm tossed 1.1 innings and allowed three runs on three hits and four walks.

Almaguer led off the sixth with a comebacker to the pitcher, who left the game following the base knock. The Mavericks brought in first baseman Nick Borowski, who is also their closer, and on the first pitch, the southpaw hit Roche, putting runners on first and second. Christian Caudle bunted both runners into scoring position and with one out and Hunter Perkins followed with a two-run single to tie the game at 6-6.

Taylor tossed 1.2 scoreless innings and Lehman entered the game in the top of the seventh. Lehman got out of a jam in the seventh with a ground out to second base.

Vesely singled for his second hit of the game in the bottom of the seventh, but the inning came to a close with the game tied at 6-6.

Lehman went out for his second inning of work with a new second baseman as Tim Gleinser entered as a defensive substitution and Vesely moved from second base to third. Lehman retired the side in order to give the Hogs the opportunity to take the lead in the bottom frame.

Heading into the ninth with a tied ballgame, Lehman tossed his third scoreless frame to head into the final inning with a 6-6 tie.

Perry singled up the middle with one out in the ninth to put the winning run on base and with two outs, Vesely singled and brought in Perry on a miscue in the outfield and Kingsville rallied back to take the game and eliminate Colorado Mesa, 7-6.

Vesely finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and Almaguer and Caudle collected two hits apiece. Roche and Perkins combined for four RBI.
