SAN ANGELO, Texas (Baseball) – Hayden Vesely picked up a save and two hits in game one and a double in game two to extend his reached base safely streak to 15 consecutive games as #RV/28 Texas A&M University-Kingsville (11-6, 4-3 LSC) split Saturday's doubleheader at #RV Angelo State University (13-7, 6-1 LSC) at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium with a 5-3 win in game one and 5-0 loss in game two.
Vesely finished the doubleheader 3-for-6 and first baseman
Jimmy Roche blasted a two-run shot in the opening game.
Game OneThe Javelinas scored two runs in the fifth inning to take 5-3 lead heading into the final 2.5 innings. The score remained the same as Texas A&M-Kingsville knotted up the series at one win apiece with a game one victory. Roche finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and his two-run shot proved to be the game winner as the home run gave Kingsville a 5-3 lead. Vesely finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and stolen base on offense and a save on the bump after tossing a scoreless seventh. The save was his first of the season.
Hunter Lehman (1-1) earned his first win in a Javelina uniform after going 3.0 shutout innings out of the 'pen, allowing just one hit. Bryce Zak (4-1) was charged with his first loss of the season despite his 11 strikeouts as the Javelina offense tagged the big right-hander for five runs – three earned.
TAMUK took a quick 1-0 lead in the leadoff inning after
Zach Smith reached on an error and stole second to put himself into scoring position. The second baseman came around to score on Vesely's opposite field single.
Brayton Carlson led off the third with a single up the middle and moved to third on Vesely's double as the Javelinas had runners in scoring position with one out. The two came around to score on an error to give Texas A&M-Kingsville a 3-0 lead.
Angelo State rallied back in the third and fourth, plating a runner in the third and two in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3, but the Hogs responded with two runs on one swing of the bat as Roche's two-run blast gave the Javelinas a 5-3 lead in the fifth. The defense stood tall as the Hogs were able to hold onto their two-run lead and take game one Saturday, 5-3.
Game TwoThe Rams offense took a 5-0 lead, scoring three runs in the first and adding a run in the second and fourth to head into the fifth with the five-run lead.
Vesely extended his reached base safely streak to 15 games but the Javelinas could not rally back and fell to Angelo State, 5-0, in game two.
Vesely, Smith and Lehman recorded the base hits for the Javelinas with Vesely and Lehman picking up a double apiece.
Paxton DeLaGarza (2-0) tossed a shutout with seven strikeouts and
Hunter Perkins (2-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season.
