WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Women's Basketball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (7-3, 2-2 LSC) capitalized on Midwestern State University's (2-7, 0-4 LSC) 25 turnovers, scoring 28 points off miscues in the 60-47 victory Monday evening at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Javelinas close out the 2016 portion of Lone Star Conference play 2-2. Meesha Wade posted her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Kaylee Kana reached double figures with 10 points to go with her five rebounds and three steals. Angelica Wilson came off the bench with seven points and eight rebounds and center Jaiton Walls posted eight points, two blocked shots and two steals.
FIRST PERIOD
Wilson came off the bench with six points and two rebounds and the Hogs held a 13-11 lead through the opening 10 minutes. The defense continued to stymie the Mustangs, forcing 10 turnovers and picking up 10 of their 13 points off turnovers.
SECOND PERIOD
The Javelinas dominated the second period, ending the first half on a 13-4 run and 31-18 lead. The second began with the teams trading points until A&M-Kingsville jumped out to the double-digit lead, outscoring the Mustangs 18-7, in the quarter. The defense wreaked havoc, holding Midwestern State to 24 percent shooting and forcing 14 turnovers.
Wilson had six points and five rebounds and Kaylin Roher drained two triples.
THIRD PERIOD
The halftime break could not slow down the Hogs as Kingsville began the second half on an 11-0 run to extend the lead to 42-18 with 6:52 remaining.
The Mustangs closed the gap with a run of their own but the Javelina lead was too much to overcome for the Crimson and Gold as TAMUK held onto a 47-33 lead after three.
FOURTH PERIOD
Texas A&M-Kingsville clinched the victory with clutch free throw shooting and bench scoring to take the first of two-regular season contests versus Midwestern State.
The bench continued its stellar play with 20 points to MSU's 10, while the points off turnovers drastically favored the Javelinas, 28-10. At the charity stripe, Kingsville went 17-of-23 and led for over 33 minutes in the ballgame.
The win was Kingsville's first road conference victory since Feb. 5, 2014 at Eastern New Mexico University and first at MSU since Jan. 27, 2010.
