KINGSVILLE, Texas – Setting a career-high with three blocks and scoring 15 points off the bench was
Micah Weaver in the Lone Star Conference Opener for the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team (0-11, 0-1 LSC). Texas Woman's (9-5, 2-1 LSC) came away with the 57-43 win at Gil H. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court that was sponsored by Big House Restaurants.
The Pioneers scored the first four points of the game until
Kyra Bauer made 1-of-2 free throws for the Javelinas first points of the game at the 15:49 make. After a Ria Pateraki jumper gave TWU an 8-3 advantage, the Blue and Gold tallied four straight points capped off by an old-fashion three-point play from
Alexis Copeland.
A 12-2 run followed in favor of the Pioneers with the only points for TAMUK coming on a layup from
Lauren Jay.
Both teams struggled to find the bottom of the basket in the last six minutes of the period. Copeland nailed the final field goal for the Javelinas, a three-pointer from the right corner, with 3:29 on the clock while TWU got a layup at the 46 second mark to go into intermission leading 26-15.
Down by 14, the Blue and Gold scored four consecutive points on two free throws from
Ashley Viera and a Bauer layup to force a timeout by the Pioneers with just under 13 minutes to play. Two layups by TWU snapped the run.
The Pioneers put on a full-court press to stretch their lead to 50-28 as 5:53 showed on the clock. TAMUK fought back with a 14-4 run over the next 5:04 but it was too little too late as the Pioneers came away with the victory.
Micah Weaver recorded six points and Ibrahim tallied four during the run.
Jay provided seven points, five rebounds, matched her career-high of two blocks and set a season-high with two steals. Copeland scored six points, all in the first half, and made the lone three-pointer of the game while Viera dished out a season best six assists.
TAMUK is back in action tomorrow night at home against Texas A&M-Commerce with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
