Javelinas Shoot Way Past Commerce In Rout

Box Score KINGSVILLE, Texas — Six different Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball players hit at least one 3-point basket as the Javelinas knocked down a season-best 10 treys en route to an 80-55 win over Texas A&M-Commerce on Wednesday night at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

Four Javelinas finished in double figures led by Lindsey Mahone and Ashley Viera, who each had 16, while Sheana Jones had a game-best three treys route to 13 points. Lauren Jay had 12 points despite being limited by fouls in the first half. Defensively, the 55 points allowed were the third fewest this season.

In a game crucial in the battle for a spot in the Lone Star Conference Tournament, the Javelinas moved to 4-8 in the LSC and 9-13 overall. They are now a game ahead of the Lions and Cameron. Both are 3-9 in the league.

Trailing 5-4 a minute into the game, Kingsville seized control of the game with a 15-0 run taking a 19-5 lead 5-1/2 minutes into the game. Viera, Michelle Wagner and Jones hit 3-point baskets on three consecutive possessions during the run.

After Commerce twice pulled back to within nine with the last time at 26-17, the Javelinas went on a 15-6 spurt to close out the period. The hosts led 41-23 at the intermission and Commerce would not get any closer in the second half.

For the game, Kingsville shot 49.2% from the floor and was 10-of-19 from behind the arc for 52.6%. Mahone grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for second double-double in as many games this week. Jay had a team-best four steals as the Hoggies had nine as a team.

Breanna Harris and La'Tisha Hearne led the Lions with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Commerce finished 36/1% from the floor and was 1-of-18 from behind the arc.

The Javelinas will play their third game in four days at 4:30 p.m. Saturday when they visit Tarleton State.
