Women’s Hoops Falls To West Texas

CANYON, Texas – Three Javelinas scored in double digits Saturday afternoon but it wasn’t enough to overcome 22 turnovers as the Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team fell 79-67 to West Texas A&M.
Kaitlyn Lowen led the way for the Javelinas with 16 points, while Sheana Clark added 15. Ashley Viera came off the bench to score 13.
The Javelinas, who dropped to 5-19 (3-15) were tied twice in the opening 20 minutes but were unable to get the lead in the first 20 minutes.
Kingsville was within a point, 26-25, late in the first half following a 3-point basket by Rita Banaszczak.
The Lady Buffs went on a 7-0 run to close the half with a 33-25 lead. Four straight points by West Texas to open the second extended its advantage to 12. Kingsville did not get closer than 10 the remainder of the game.
The Javelinas outshot their hosts 45.7% to 40.4% from the field and out-rebounded them 34-33. West Texas, however, had 14 steals to just 13 turnovers.
The Lady Buffs also had an advantage at the foul line hitting 30-of-36 attempts, while Kingsville hit 23 in 30 opportunities.
Devin Griffin led the way with 31 points and 11 rebounds, while Chontiquah White added 28. Griffin was 13-of-15 from the foul line, while White was 12-of-15.
The Javelinas play their final home game on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Angelo State. It will be the last opportunity for seniors Brandi Clark, Breanna Gonzalez and Lowen to play on Kingsville Hampton Inn Court. The trio will be recognized at the game.
