Kingsville Earns OT Win For Second Time Against Dustdevils

Box Score KINGSVILLE, Texas – For the second time in as many meetings, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team used overtime to knock off South Texas rival Texas A&M International as the Javelinas handed the Dustdevils an 83-82 defeat on Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

After falling behind early by 14 points, 21-7, as Samantha Chacon hit four 3-point baskets in the first five minutes, the Javelinas spent much of the contest working their way back into the contest by halftime.

A 10-0 run in the over a 6-minute span allowed the Hoggies to pull within a point 32-31 with 2:58 left in the half. Ashley Viera and Rosalie Cutri each netted four points in the span.

It wasn't until the 15:30 mark of the season half that Kingsville took its first lead of the contest. Lindsey Mahone swiped a steal and then fed Tonje Milde on the 2-in-1 fastbreak for a bucket making the score 39-38.

The teams stayed within four points of each other the remainder of regulation until the final minute.

Malika Jackson hit 4-of-4 foul shots pushing the Dustdevils advantage to 70-63 with 30 seconds left.

Viera answered with a 3-point basket that ignited a 10-3 run to tie the game. After Re'Nikia Meshack hit 1-of-2 foul shots, Cutri drained a pair of foul shots with 12 seconds left after being fouled on a drive to the basket.

After Jessica Woo hit two free throws for the visitors, Mahone drained her second trey in less than 25 seconds with less than 10 seconds left to make it a 73-71 contest.

The Javelinas tied the game with under a second left on jumper off the right wing by Cutri after Jackson stepped on the sideline receiving an inbound pass.

Lauren Jay, who had a season-high 14 points, gave the Javelinas the lead for good in overtime with her second three of the contest. Cutri's bucket with 1:19 remaining extended the Javelina lead to 82-77.
Woo's trey seconds later pulled the visitors to within two points.

Kingsville had opportunities to extend its lead but as 1-of-6 from the line in the final minute. Meshack scored off a drive to the hoop with less than 10 seconds remaining but the Dustdevils could not get closer.

Mahone led the Hoggies with 15 points and eight rebounds. Cutri, Jay and Viera each added 14 points. Ruby Robertson added 12. Sheana Jones and Mahone each three steals, while Cutri had a game-high five assists.

Chacon led International with 21 points, while Woo had 19. Jackson had 16 points and 13 rebounds.

The Javelinas close out 2013 with games at Southern Arkansas on Tuesday and at Arkansas-Monticello on Thursday.
