Javelinas Suffer Sixth Straight Loss of Season to Tarleton

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – In their first conference meeting of 2013, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team fell to Tarleton State 90-70.

The Javelinas fall to 1-3 in conference play and 3-7 overall. Tarleton continues their undefeated stint with 4-0 in the Lone Star Conference and 7-2 overall. The win and a loss by Incarnate Word moves Tarleton to first in the LSC.

In the first half, Kingsville allowed Tarleton to take an early lead, 9-2, but senior Breanna Gonzalez sparked an 8-3 run making it 12-10 with 14:09 on the clock. The Javelinas stayed with the Lady TexAnns point-for-point until the halfway mark as Tarleton continued on an 11-0 run in two minutes, 25-12. From there, the Lady TexAnns ran away with the game 49-34 at halftime.

Tarleton continued their momentum in the second half, increasing the lead to 20 points. The Javelinas shot 39 percent while the Lady TexAnns shot 58 percent from the field. Kingsville stole the ball away from Tarleton 13 times while they only had five steals.

"We needed a better effort on the defensive end. It's hard to beat teams when they shoot in the high fifties like Tarleton did tonight," Head Coach Michael Trujillo said. "Overall though, I was happy how hard we competed regardless of the score. We'll recoup and work to correct a few things and get ready for Commerce on Saturday."

Senior guard Kaitlyn Lowen led the Javelinas with 21 points, five steals, one assist and one rebound. Junior transfers Sheana Jones and Rita Banaszczak with eight points each.

Four Lady TexAnns scored double figures. Shanae Lowrance led Tarleton with 16 points, followed by Kiara Wright with 13, Keyra Johnson with 11 and Cheyenne Berry with 10 points.

The Javelinas will be back on their home court Saturday afternoon for another LSC match up against Texas A&M-Commerce at 1 p.m.
