KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team received double-digit performances from Kaitlyn Lowen and Ashley Viera but it was enough to overcome a second-half surge by West Texas A&M as the Javelinas fell 72-48 Saturday on Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
Lowen led the Javelinas (3-10, 1-6) with 13 points, while Viera had 10 in the contest. West Texas’ Devin Griffin led the way for the Lady Buffs (7-9, 3-4) with a double-double scoring 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. It was her fifth double-double of the season.
The first half was tight with the visitors holding a slim 29-26 lead at the intermission.
Through the first 8-1/2 minutes of the half the teams were tied five times the last at 12-12. West Texas then went on 12-3 run to take a 24-15 lead with 6:31 remaining. Griffin had seven straight points in the run.
Kingsville answered with an 11-3 run to pull within 29-26 at the break. Breanna Gonzalez had five points and Lowen four to make it a three-point game.
In the second half, West Texas opened with an 18-2 run over the first 7-1/2 minutes and never looked back. The Lady Buffs, who shot 52% in the game, hit 57.1% from the floor in the last 20 minutes.
The Javelinas head to Angelo State for a mid-week road game on Wednesday, before returning home to face Abilene Christian next Saturday at 1 p.m.
