Javs Can't Hang with Lady Buffs

CANYON, TEXAS – West Texas A&M ran away from visiting Texas A&M-Kingsville in the second half en route to a 69-37 Lone Star Conference victory on Saturday afternoon at First United Bank Center.

Two days after picking up a critical LSC road victory on Thursday at Eastern New Mexico, the Javelinas (4-14, 3-9) played a strong first 15 minutes against the Lady Buffs (11-8, 9-4). They led 22-21 with 5:02 left in the first half after a jumper by Jackie Stanley (Wylie/Wylie HS).

The Lady Buffs closed the half on a 9-1 run and then outscored the Javs 39-14 in the second half. Their tough defense limited the Javelinas to 20.0 percent shooting from the field and 16 turnovers in the half.

The Javelinas started the game 9-of-19 from the field, but finished shooting only 29.2 percent overall. They went 1-for-5 from three-point range and were 8-of-17 at the charity stripe. Stanley finished with eight points and 11 rebounds before fouling out in 24 minutes of action. Inekka Stevenson (Freeport/Brazosport HS) added eight points and four boards.

The Lady Buffs shot 32.8 percent from the field, made 4-of-11 from three-point range and were 25-of-33 at the foul line. Devin Griffin led the team with 17 points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Kenisha Harris added 14 points and six boards. They forced the Hoggies into a season-high 29 turnovers that led to 27 points.

The Javelinas are back in action on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Tarleton State.
