Mustangs Knock Off Hoggies

  WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team took an early lead at Lone Star Conference South Division rival Midwestern State, but could not hold it in a 63-52 loss on Wednesday night. (box score)

The Javelinas (3-20, 1-10) scored the first eight points of the game and still led with 6:32 left in the first half before the Mustangs (9-13, 5-5) took the lead. The Mustangs took a 30-25 lead into halftime and led the entire second half. The Javs pulled to within two points with 15:21 remaining in the game when Ashley Perez (Lytle/Lytle HS) scored on a conventional three-point play.

The Javelinas were never able to get any closer the rest of the game. The Mustangs were able to push their lead to double figures over the final four minutes of the game.

The Javelinas shot 34.6 percent from the field, made 3-of-17 from three-point range and were 13-of-18 from the foul line. Meagan Barlow (D’Hanis/D’Hanis HS) led the team with 15 points while Perez had 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Kelly Bastow (Bunbury,Australia/Bunbury Catholic HS) led the team with four steals.

The Mustangs shot 36.4 percent from the field, made 4-of-14 three-point attempts and were 11-of-16 from the foul line. Nolisha Markham led the team with 15 points and seven rebounds. Katiya Jackson posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Karissa Lang dished out six assists to lead all players.

The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday at home against #19 Tarleton State at 1 p.m.
