Javelina Women Fall to 1-8

WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS – Playing their first game in 10 days, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team dropped a Lone Star Conference decision on the road to Midwestern State, 86-70 on Saturday night.

A 16-0 run over the latter half of the first half provided the Mustangs (6-3, 3-1) with some breathing room as they took a 49-29 lead into halftime. In the second half, their lead went to as many as 32 points before the Javelinas (1-8, 0-4) were able to close the gap at the end.

The Javelinas once again struggled to shoot from the field as they shot 38.3 percent from the floor. They made 4-of-17 three-point attempts and were 20-for-27 at the foul line. Inekka Stevenson (Freeport/Brazosport HS) led the team with 15 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Ashley Benavides (Olmito/Los Fresnos HS) came off the bench to score a career high 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field and grabbed six rebounds. Meagan Barlow (D’Hanis/D’Hanis HS) added 10 points and three assists. The team had 46 rebounds and committed 24 turnovers.

The Mustangs had a balanced scoring attack with five players scoring in double figures. They shot 41.2 percent from the field, made 4-of-9 three-point attempts and were 26-for-41 at the foul line. They outscored the Hoggies by 42-24 on points in the paint and tallied 23 points off turnovers. Savannah Carver led the team with 15 points while Cierra Thompson had 14 points and five rebounds. Shatoia Gober added 13 points off the bench. They had 44 rebounds and committed 12 turnovers.

The Javelinas are back in action on Monday at 6 p.m. at Cameron University.
