Javs Grounded by Falcons

ODESSA, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team ran into a buzzsaw on Saturday afternoon in a 99-57 loss at UT-Permian Basin. (box score)

The Falcons (5-2) knocked down nine three-pointers in the first half en route to 56 points and a 25-point lead. The Javelinas (1-3) were not able to close the gap in the second half as UTPB continued their hot shooting from the field.

The Falcons finished the game making 40-of-66 from the field, a 60.6 percent clip. They knocked down 12-of-25 from three-point range and were 7-for-10 from the foul line. They had 43 rebounds and 32 assists while committing 16 turnovers. They had five players score in double figures including Jessi Cowden who led the team with 17 points and six rebounds. Briannah Matthews scored 16 points off the bench on 7-of-8 shooting from the field while Cashena Mathis had six points, eight boards and five assists. Tammy Acosta led the team with nine assists.

The Javelinas shot 30.9 percent from the field, made 4-of-24 from three-point range and were 11-for-15 from the foul line. Roslyn Robbins (Houston/La Marque HS) led the team with a season high 11 points off the bench while Amanda Haven (Calallen/Calallen HS) had 11 points, four rebounds and two steals. Breanna Gonzalez (San Antonio/Christian Academy HS) added 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field.

The Javelinas are back in action on Thursday for IBC Bank “Pack the House” Night against Lone Star Conference rival Eastern New Mexico at 7 p.m.
