Falcons Handle Javelinas, 76-58

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Visiting UT-Permian Basin flew past the Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team on Thursday night at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court, 76-58.

The Falcons (3-1) employed a zone defense for most of the game and the Javelinas (1-2) were unable to solve the riddle. UTPB used a 9-0 first half run to build up at 13-point halftime lead and then outscored the Javs 15-6 in the first five minutes of the second half to take a 22-point lead. The Hoggies would never get closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

The Falcons were able to control the game on both the inside and the outside. They outrebounded the Javelinas, 39-29 and knocked down 9-of-20 three-point attempts while the Hoggies hit on 4-of-16 attempts.

The Javelinas shot 40.0 percent from the field, made 10-of-18 from the foul line and committed 20 turnovers. Inekka Stevenson (Freeport/Brazosport HS) led the team with her first double-double of the season. She scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Meagan Barlow (D’Hanis/D’Hanis HS) scored 15 points off the bench on 6-of-10 shooting from the field.

The Falcons shot 49.0 percent from the field, connected on 19-of-32 from the foul line and committed 22 turnovers. All five starters scored in double figures. Jessi Cowden led the team with 19 points and eight rebounds while Teisha King nearly had a triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Lauren Unger and Taniqua Ards each had 13 points while Tammy Acosta added 10 points and five assists.

The Javelinas have a nine-day layoff before traveling to Odessa to take on the Falcons again on November 26.
