The Javelinas (3-15, 1-5) briefly took a first half lead over the TexAnns (16-2, 6-0) with 6:38 remaining. Freshmen Novella Thomas (Corpus Christi/West Oso HS) and Chelsea Solis (San Antonio/Wagner HS) hit back-to-back jumpers for the Javelinas, but Lisa Parker responded with a three-pointer for the TexAnns on their next possession to reclaim the lead. TSU closed the first half on a 17-3 run to take a 39-27 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Javelinas pulled to within six points on three occasions. The final time came after Breanna Gonzalez (San Antonio/Christian Academy) knocked down a pair of free throws with 16:17 remaining in the game and the score was 47-41. The TexAnns quickly responded with a 22-4 run over the next 6:53 to put the game away.
Tarleton State scored 29 points off A&M-Kingsville’s turnovers outscoring the Javelinas by 15 points.
The Javelinas shot 38.0 percent from the field, made 6-of-15 from three-point range and were 17-of-28 from the foul line. Thomas led the Hoggies with 17 points, four rebounds and three assists. Solis added 11 points and five rebounds. Victoria Gonzalez (Hidalgo/Hidalgo HS) led the team with 11 rebounds and two blocks.
The TexAnns shot 46.0 percent from the field, made 8-of-23 from three-point range and were 15-of-22 from the foul line. Morgan Stehling led the team with 18 points off the bench. Brittnie Haley and Tara Towns each scored 12 points. Kelsey Benford added six rebounds, five assists and three blocks.
The Javelinas are back in action on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at home against West Texas A&M.
