Javelinas Lose First Home Game

The Javelinas (18-8, 6-5) fell behind 12-2 in the first 3:30 of the game before rallying in the first half. They closed to within four points on a Victoria Gonzalez (Hidalgo/Hidalgo HS) lay-up with 7:06 left in the half, but did not score for the next three and a half minutes as the Lady Buffs (26-2, 10-1) went on an 11-0 run. West Texas took a 40-29 lead into halftime.

In the second half, hung tight for the first 15 minutes, but could never get any closer than seven points. A late 10-0 run by the Lady Buffs put the game away and they won easily.

The Javelinas shot 36.4 percent from the field, made 6-of-22 three-point attempts and were 13-for-21 at the foul line. Senior Felicia Soza (Beeville/A.C. Jones HS) led the team with 16 points and seven rebounds. Kayla Naylor (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) added 13 points and knocked down a trio of three-pointers. The Javelinas committed 15 turnovers and forced the Lady Buffs into 16 miscues.

The Lady Buffs shot 57.4 percent from the field, made 2-of-6 three-point attempts and were 17-of-21 from the foul line. They pulled down 10 more rebounds than the Hoggies. Megan McLain led the team with 32 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Three other players had 10 points apiece.

The Javelinas finish out the regular season on Saturday at Eastern New Mexico in a 1 o’clock tip-off. A win would likely earn the team a #3 seed in the LSC Tournament which starts next Thursday in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
