Javelinas Lose at ASU

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – Poor shooting and ball control proved to be too much to overcome for the Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team on Wednesday night as they lost 60-44 at Lone Star Conference South Division rival Angelo State University.  (box score)

The Javelinas (17-6, 5-3) shot a season low 31.6 percent from the field, committed a season high 24 turnovers and scored a season low 44 points.  In the first half, they took an 11-9 lead after a Dyana Bullinger (Spring/Klein HS) three-pointer with 12:50 left in the half, but the Rambelles (11-10, 4-3) outscored the Hogs 19-8 over the rest of the half.

In the second half, the ‘Belles continued to stifle the Javelinas’ offense and built up a 42-26 lead with 9:48 remaining.  The Javelinas held the ‘Belles scoreless over the next six minutes, but could only manage 10 points at the same time.  After the Javelinas cut the lead to six points, the ‘Belles went on a 6-0 run and then hit eight free throws in the final 1:14 to seal the victory.

The Javelinas were led by Felicia Soza (Beeville/A.C. Jones HS) who scored 16 points.  She was the only player to score in double figures and now has 999 points in her career.  With one more point she will become the 13th player in school history to score 1,000 points.  Nikki Thering (Spring/Oak Ridge HS) added nine points off the bench by knocking down 3-of-5 three-point attempts.

The Hoggies only had eight assists against their 24 turnovers and went 1-for-2 at the foul line.  The ‘Belles went 15-for-18 at the foul line and had 13 assists against 22 turnovers.

The ‘Belles shot 42.6 percent from the field and pulled down three more rebounds than the Javelinas.  Christie Rasmussen led the team with 12 points off the bench.  Paige Weishuhn added seven points and five blocks.

The Javelinas are back in action next Wednesday at home against Midwestern State at 6 o’clock.
