Hoggies Lose at #9 Lady Buffs

  CANYON, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team tried to make it two straight victories at #9 West Texas A&M on Wednesday night, but the Ceciley Johnson powered the home team to an 88-72 win in the Lone Star Conference South Division opener.  (box score)

The Lady Buffs (17-1, 1-0) got off to a good start as they scored 11 of the first 13 points of the game.  They led 36-19 with 4:51 left in the half before the Javelinas (12-4, 0-1) closed the gap before half time.  The Hoggies closed the half on a 13-4 run to make it 40-32 at the break.

At the start of the second half, the Javelinas quickly closed to within four points after Ursula Hill (Cypress/Cy-Ridge HS) and Angela Franklin (Vacaville, CA/Vanden HS) made consecutive lay-ups.

The Javelinas still trailed by only five points with 10:29 left in the game before the Lady Buffs went on a 17-3 run to put the game away.

Johnson led the Lady Buffs with a game high 24 points and nine rebounds.  She went 10-for-10 from the field and 4-for-4 at the foul line.  West Texas shot 58.1 percent from the field for the game, including 67.9 percent in the second half.  They made 4-of-14 three-point attempts and were 12-for-18 at the foul line.

The Lady Buffs had three other players score in double figures.  Megan McLain had 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.  Joni Unruh added12 points, six boards and five rebounds while Jamie Simmons had 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Javelinas were led by Franklin who had 21 points off the bench.  Shooting guard Felicia Soza (Beeville/A.C. Jones HS) added 17 points and five rebounds.  Dyana Bullinger (Spring/Klein HS) led the defensive effort with five steals.

The Hoggies shot 41.4 percent from the field, made 3-of-13 three-point attempts and 21-of-25 from the foul line.

The Lady Buffs grabbed 11 more rebounds than the Javelinas and each team committed five turnovers.
The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday at 1 o’clock against LSC South Division rival Eastern New Mexico at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
