Hoggies Can't Dig Out of Hole

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team put themselves in a big hole on Wednesday night falling behind 37-15 at halftime against Lone Star Conference South Division rival Tarleton State.  The Javelinas (15-11, 5-6) closed to within five points in the second half, but the TexAnns (15-11, 6-5) held on for a 73-65 victory at the Steinke Center.  (box score)

The Javelinas came out of the gates rolling as they jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead after just 2:16.  Unfortunately, the team would make just one more field goal the rest of the first half.  The TexAnns put together runs of 13-0 and 14-0 to take a commanding lead into halftime.  The TexAnns hit 7-of-14 three-point attempts while holding the Hoggies to 4-for-22 shooting from the floor and forcing them into 14 turnovers.

In the second half, the Javelinas quickly closed the gap to 38-28 as a Felicia Soza (Beeville/Jones HS) three-pointer capped a 13-1 run.  The lead stayed in double figures until the Hoggies put together another spurt and when Angela Franklin (Vacaville, CA/Vanden HS) made a layup with 5:00 remaining it pulled the team to within 54-49.

Down the stretch the TexAnns made a pair of three-pointers to prevent the Hoggies from coming all the way back.  They scored their final nine points from the foul line to seal the victory.  The win for TSU means that the Javelinas must win on Saturday at Midwestern State and the TexAnns must lose at Angelo State for the Hoggies to go to the postseason.

The Javelinas outscored the TexAnns 50-36 in the second half, but it was not enough.  Franklin and Tammi Mitchell (Tyler/John Tyler HS) led the team with 14 points apiece.  On Senior Night LaKeisha Jones (Winnsboro, LA/Crowville HS) pumped in 13 points and grabbed a team high 13 rebounds.  Junior point guard Kayla Naylor (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) added 11 points and four assists.  The team shot 57.6 percent from the field in the second half to raise their game total to 41.8 percent.  They made 5-of-15 three-pointers and were 14-of-22 from the foul line.  They were outrebounded by a 48-32 margin and committed 20 turnovers while forcing 18.

The TexAnns were led by JoAnne Jones’ 17 points and 12 rebounds.  Sonya Sundberg added 17 points and six assists while making all eight of her free throw attempts.  Shelby Adamson chipped in with 11 points and four assists while D’Anna Dingler and nine points and 10 rebounds.  TSU shot 36.9 percent for the game, made 10-of-24 three-point attempts and were 15-of-24 at the foul line.

The Javelinas play their final game of the regular season on Saturday night at LSC South rival Midwestern State with a scheduled tip-off for 6 o’clock.
