Javs Drop Contest

COMMERCE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team was seeking its first road win of the year on Saturday night at Texas A&M-Commerce, but will have to wait a little longer after losing 101-75.  (box score)

The Javelinas (4-4) trailed 45-39 at the half, but outscored the Lions (4-2) 16-8 in the first 4:05 of the second half to take a 55-53 lead.  Unfortunately, that was the last lead the Hoggies would hold as the Lions went on a 14-1 run and never looked back.

The Javelina defense struggled to slow down the high octane offense of the Lions.  Commerce shot 57 percent from the field and went 14-of-25 from three-point range.  Brittney Jordan, the leading scorer in the
Lone Star Conference, poured in a game-high 27 points while making 6-of-8 three-pointers.

The Javelinas were led on the offensive end by senior center LaKeisha Jones (Winnsboro, LA/Crowville HS) who had 18 points while knocking down 9-of-14 shots from the field.  Felicia Soza (Beeville/A.C. Jones HS), Kayla Naylor (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) and Angela Franklin (Vacaville, CA/Vanden HS) all scored in double figures.  Dyana Bullinger (Spring/Klein HS) just missed a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds while Ursula Hill (Cypress/Cy-Fair HS) added eight points, six boards and six assists.  Hill went 2-for-2 at the foul line and has now made 16 consecutive free throws and is 17-for-18 on the season.

The Javs shot 43 percent from the field, but made just 6-of-20 three-pointers and were 15-of-24 from the foul line.  The team was out rebounded 44-34 in the game and committed 25 turnovers while forcing 24.

Jordan led the Lions with 27 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and three steals.  Nakazi Glover added 18 points while Ashley Murphy contributed 15 to the cause.  The 101 points were a season high for the team and the most since the 2004-05 season.

Next up for the Javelinas is Missouri Southern on Wednesday night at 7 o’clock in the Steinke Center.  The game can be watched and listened to online by clicking on the live broadcasts link on www.javelinaathletics.com.
