Dyana Bullinger went 5-for-6 from three-point range on Saturday.  DENTON, TEXAS – For 31 minutes the Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team played even with Texas Woman’s University, but a 17-0 run by TWU ended any threat of an upset.  TWU won the Lone Star Conference crossover game by an 83-65 margin on Saturday.  (box score)
The Javelinas (0-3) trailed the Pioneers (3-0) for much of the first half, but they closed the half with a 13-0 run that featured two three-pointers by Dyana Bullinger (Spring/Klein HS).  The Hogs went into the break with a 35-29 lead.
The second half began well for the Javelinas as they took a 42-34 lead with 17:16 to play after Bullinger hit another three-pointer and Angela Franklin (Vacaville, CA/Vanden HS) knocked down a jumper.
The Pioneers started to reassert themselves with Jessica Hanna leading the way.  Hanna scored nine points in a six minute stretch and TWU held a 55-49 lead with 10:49 remaining.
The Javelinas responded quickly as Bullinger knocked down her fifth three-pointer of the game and Felicia Soza (Beeville/A.C. Jones HS) added her own trifecta on back-to-back possessions.  Soza then retied the score at 59-59 on the next possession with a jumper with 9:17 remaining.
From that point on the game was all Pioneers.  Hanna, Jessica Durr and Brittany Foster combined to score TWU’s next 20 points giving the home team a 77-60 lead with 2:09 to play.  The Pioneers made their free throws in the final minutes preventing any thoughts of a dramatic comeback.
The Javelinas were led by Franklin and Bullinger who each scored 17 points.  Franklin finished the game 8-for-13 from the field while Bullinger went 5-of-6 from three-point range and pulled down seven rebounds.  Point guard Ursula Hill (Cypress/Cy-Fair HS) added seven points and seven assists.  LaKeisha Jones (Winnsboro, LA/Paris JC) led the team with nine rebounds.  The Javelinas shot 42.4 percent from the field, were 8-for-17 from three-point range, but struggled at the foul line making just 7-of-13 attempts.
The Pioneers shot just 36.4 percent from the field in the first half and did not attempt a single free throw.  In the second half they shot 60.7 percent from the field and were 16-of-22 at the foul line.  Hanna led the team with 19 points and eight rebounds.  Durr added 13 points, Foster contributed 15 points off the bench and Keshia Bolds pumped in 10 points and had six assists.  Tiandrea Dixon dished off nine assists and had six steals while Renee Renz grabbed a game high 10 rebounds.  The Pioneers had seven more rebounds than the Javs and three fewer turnovers.
The Hoggies are back in action on Friday night at 7 o’clock against Central Missouri in the annual Turkey Day Shootout in Kingsville.
