Texas A&M University-Kingsville Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and Campus Recreation D. Scott Gines announced the hiring of Stefanie Maynard as the next head golf coach of the Javelina program in 2016. Maynard took over the Javelina golf program on July 1st of that year. She joined Texas A&M-Kingsville after seven seasons as the assistant coach at Stephen F. Austin University and became the second head coach in the brief history of the program.
The 2022-23 season saw the Javelinas cap off the year on a strong note, finishing fourth at the PGA Works Collegiate Championship in Bessemer, Ala. Additionally, five Javelinas were named to the WGCA All-Scholar Team.
The 2021-22 season will be Maynard's sixth year in charge of Javelina women's golf and her program is coming of a 2020-21 campaign that saw several new milestones attained. One of those accomplishments was a new high-water mark in the national rankings, where the Javelinas finished at No. 66, three spots ahead of their previous program best, set in 2012-13.
Maynard also watched two of her student-athletes secure their place in the school record book 2020-21. Kristina Gutierrez concluded her career as the program's all-time leader in birdies with 111 and she also left Kingsville with the program's best stroke average among Javelina golfers with at least 50 rounds played at 78.95. Madison Lake's time with TAMUK came to an end as well, but not before she secured the program's top spot for most rounds played with 87 and counting scores with 86. Lake also set a new Javelina record for the lowest round ever at the conference tournament, posting a pair of one-under 71 scores at the 2021 Lone Star Conference Tournament.
Maynard guided a Javelina team that created a number of memorable moments during the 2018-19 season, which ended with sophomore Gutierrez being honored as an All-LSC Honorable Mention and All-Academic selection. In October, Gutierrez became the first Javelina to ever win an individual tournament championship, capturing the top spot at the Skyhawk Women's Intercollegiate. Her final round 69 in that event represented the third-lowest 18-hole score in program history. Maynard saw her team finish second in their final event of the season, the PGA Works Collegiate Championship in May. TAMUK's second round 303 in that tournament tied for the third lowest team round score ever for the Javelinas.
In 2018, Maynard helped lead the Javelinas to a tournament title when they bested the field at the Jack Brown Memorial Golf Tournament on Feb. 5-6. Led by Bailey Blezinger's second-place showing, TAMUKÂ finished 11 strokes ahead of second-place Lubbock Christian to capture the championship in Laredo.Â
Â
At SFA, Maynard oversaw the women’s program, guiding the Ladyjacks to a fourth-place finish in the Southland Conference in 2015-16. Jessica White received second team all-conference honors and Sydney Reed placed seventh individually at the conference championships.
Â
2014-15 was a record-breaking season for the Ladyjacks as Stephen F. Austin recorded the lowest scoring average in program history with a 306.29. The average was a five-stroke improvement over the 2013-14 season and 24 shots better than the first year of the program (2009-10). The Ladyjacks won the first ever team title at the Incarnate Word Fall Invitational in October of 2014. SFA finished fourth at the Southland Conference Championships. Then freshman Erica Lautensack won the first individual championship with the title at the ASU Lady Red Wolf Classic with a 3-under 141. A week later, she was crowned co-champion at the Islander Classic.
Â
White became the first golfer in program history to earn a Southland Conference championship, shooting a 4-over 220 and birdieing the playoff hole en route to being named the program’s first-ever first team All-SLC selection. White and Lautensack both earned SLC Golfer of the Month honors, the first two in program history.
Â
In the classroom, White, Sara Jones and Ann Holcomb were two-time WGCA All-America Scholar-Athletes and Mackenzie Steiner was a three-time selection. White was named the SLC Student-Athlete of the Year for women’s golf.
Â
As a player, Maynard finished with 16 top-10 finishes at UT-Pan American (now UTRGV). There, she registered 10 top-five performances, was a four-time All-Independent selection and was crowned Golfer of the Year in 2003-04. Maynard was named UTPA Female Student-Athlete of the Year in 2005-06. She won the UTPA Bronc Classic twice and was a three-time champion of the PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship.
Â
A 2008 semi-finalist in the Texas Women's State Amateur consolation bracket, Maynard won the Austin-San Antonio Tour Championship in 2007. She is also a two-time National Championship qualifier in the Golf Channel Amateur Tour, winning the title in 2007. A 2005 State Amateur Championships quarterfinalists, Maynard was a runner-up at the 2005 Central Texas Women's Amateur after shooting a five-under par 139.
Â
A mechanical engineering major, she graduated magna cum laude in 2006 and was a four-time NGCA All-American Scholar.
Â
Maynard has a daughter, Rebekah, born in January of 2015.
