SAN ANGELO, Texas - Day two of the Lone Star Conference Outdoor Championship saw major action from the Texas A&M-Kingsville track & field teams, seeing the teams move up the leaderboards as well as a school record being broken.
The Javelina men made massive movement on day two of the competition, racking up 64.5 points to climb from sixth place to second with a total of 69.5Â points. The women saw progress as well, moving from sixth place to fifth with a 19-point gain for a total of 23 points.
West Texas A&M remains the leader in both the men's and women's divisions at 119.5 and 112 points respectively. Rounding out the top three for the men, Lubbock Christian trails the Javelinas in third at 37 points. For the women, Angelo State sits in second place with 95.5 points while UT Tyler is third at 37 points.
In the standout performance of the day, dual sport athlete
Devon Williams wrote her name into the TAMUK record books with a new school record in the women's discus throw. Williams posted a best distance of 50.85m (166' 10") to secure first place in the event by nearly four meters. The mark breaks the old school record by almost a foot, previously standing at 50.57m (165' 11") set byÂ
Gertrudis Balli in 2021.
Elsewhere in the field events, the Javelinas made big gains. Four Javelina men scored points in the men's pole vault, including a 1-2 finish by
Thomas Nieto and
Reid Barba. Barba secured second by clearing 4.96m (16' 3.25") on his first attempt while Nieto just edged out his teammate to take first, clearing 5.06m (16' 7.25") on his second try.
Roel De Leon and
Jace Williams tacked on 7.5 more points for the Hogs in the event, finishing tied for fourth and sixth respectively.Â
De Leon also put on a heroic performance in the decathlon. Coming into the final five events in fourth overall, De Leon posted two first-place finishes in the decathlon pole vault and 1500m to sneak away with a second-place overall finish at 6581 points - just barely coming out ahead of third-place David Richards of West Texas at 6557 points.
The Javelina men also got a great points haul from the discus throw.
Paxton Hair brought home the silver medal with a throw of 52.98m (173' 10") while
Eric Edison and
Kobi Valchar added on nine more points with fourth and fifth-place finishes. Edison posted a distance of 48.17m (158' 0") on his last attempt while Valchar chalked up a 47.89m (157' 1") throw.
Ke'Andre Jones and
Madison Ramos added more top-three finishes for the Hogs in the men's and women's high jumps. Jones cleared a height of 2.07m (6' 9.5") while Ramos checked off 1.64m (5' 4.5") on her final attempt. Jones also finished sixth in the men's long jump with a distance of 6.90m (22' 7.75").
On the track,
Maya Espinosa qualified for the finals of the women's 800m with a third-place finish, clocking a time of 2:15.83.Â
Melanie Roland and
Cynai Christopher both qualified in the women's 400m, bringing home fifth and seventh-place finishes with times of 54.53 and 55.35.
Two Javelina men also qualified for their final in the 400m as
Taylor Chaney and
Sterling Riles finished fourth and fifth. Chaney recorded a time of 47.88 while Riles finished with a 48.15.
Gabriel Field cruised to the finals in the men's 400m hurdles, beating out second place by over a second with a time of 52.59.
Cohan Thompson also qualified in fifth with a 54.91.
Conference champions will be crowned tomorrow on the third and final day of competition, beginning with the men's javelin throw at 11 a.m. Running events begin at 2:30 p.m. with the finals of the women's 4x100 relay.
