Cross Country Polls Released

(07/31/12)

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Eastern New Mexico and Midwestern State are the favorites to capture the 2012 Lone Star Conference men’s and women’s cross country championships, respectively, according to the league’s preseason poll announced Tuesday.

The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s and women’s cross country teams were each picked eighth in the league. The Javelina men finished seventh in the LSC last year, but lost All-American and LSC Runner of the Year Kiya Dandena to graduation. “We won’t be able to replace Kiya with one runner,” said head coach Ryan Dall. “My hope is that we have a number of runners step up their performance.”

The Javelina women took eighth place at the LSC Meet in 2011, but have a number of young runners who return with experience. “Hopefully, with the experience our team has gained over the last two years they will be able to take that and build upon it,” said Dall

The Greyhounds received 18 first-place votes for a total of 178 points in the men’s poll, while the Mustangs were the unanimous choice on 21 ballots for 189 points on the women’s side.

In 2011, ENMU’s men won their first conference crown, while the MSU women earned their fourth consecutive title.

Nine men’s teams and women’s teams start their season in September, while the postseason begins with the LSC Championships hosted by Cameron, on October 20, 2012.
