KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Texas A&M-Kingsville head women’s basketball coach Scott Hyland announced that he signed a pair of players during the early signing period that ends today. Los Fresnos’ Ashley Benavides and Corpus Christi Ray’s Ashley Viera will both be playing for the Javelinas next year. “We really liked what we saw from both of these girls during their junior seasons and had a chance to work with them both at our camps this summer,” said Hyland. “That is when we knew they were exactly the type of people we were looking for in our program.” Benavides is a 6-2 post player who averaged 11.2 pints, 8.5 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game while leading Los Fresnos to a 26-9 record last year. She also shot 51 percent from the field. “Ashley has tremendous potential. Her combination of size, athletic ability, skill, and hard work are things I believe give her a chance to have a great impact in our program,” said Hyland. Viera is a point guard who averaged a double-double last year with 10 points and 12 assists per game. She earned TABC All-State honors and led Ray to a 29-9 record. “Ashley is going to be a great addition to our program. Simply put, she is a winner! She is a very good athlete that gets her teammates involved in the offense but still has the ability to knock down the open 3. We are very excited about her signing with us,” said Hyland. #### pr10346-smm |
