The Javelinas (15-4, 3-1) jumped out to an early double digit lead in the first half after Felicia Soza (Beeville/A.C. Jones HS) knocked down consecutive three-pointers to give the team an 18-6 lead with 10:48 left in the first half.The Mustangs (6-11, 0-4) stormed back and closed the gap to two points within four minutes.The half ended with the Javelinas ahead 34-33. In the second half, the Mustangs came out of the gate quickly and took a 46-40 lead with 15:39 to play in regulation after a Nolisha Markham lay-up.The Hoggies responded by forcing two turnovers and quickly tied the game. The Javelinas looked like they had taken control of the game late in the second half when they went on a 15-3 run to take a 70-60 lead with 3:06 remaining. There was no quit in the Mustangs as they closed regulation on a 10-0 run and tied the game with 35 seconds remaining on an Andrea Buben three-pointers.The Javelinas had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Soza’s three-point attempt rimmed out. The Javelinas rebounded in overtime as they scored quickly and then held the Mustangs to 2-of-11 shooting in the period.The Hoggies never trailed in the extra period and picked up their second overtime victory of the season. The Javelinas only shot 41.8 percent from the floor, but had 21 assists on 28 field goals.They knocked down 7-of-19 three-pointers and were 20-for-28 from the foul line.Angela Franklin (Vacaville, CA/Vanden HS) led the team with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists.She went 6-for-9 from the field and 5-for-5 at the foul line.Soza added 15 points and three steals. Rochelle Ikeni (Fresno, CA/Roosevelt HS) notched a double-double for the Javelinas with 11 points and 12 rebounds.Dyana Bullinger (Spring/Klein HS) added 12 points and seven rebounds.Guards Kayla Naylor (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) and Ursula Hill (Cypress/Cy-Fair HS) each scored eight points and combined for 15 assists. Markham’s 20 points and eight rebounds off the bench led the Mustangs.Jazman Patterson and Cierra Thompson each recorded double-doubles for the home team.Patterson had 16 points and 12 rebounds while Thompson had 11 points and 14 boards. The Mustangs shot 34.8 percent from the field, made 4-of-21 three-pointers and were 26-for-35 at the foul line.They pulled down six more rebounds than the Javelinas, but committed four more turnovers. The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday afternoon at 5 o’clock against divisional rival Tarleton State at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
