Greaves, Javelinas take over Tar Heel State on first day of NCAAs

Senior records second-place finish in the long jump

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Texas A&M University-Kingsville track and field program wrapped up day one of competition at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor National Championships at Eddie C. McGrit Field hosted by Johnson C. Smith University on Thursday. The day featured Charles Greaves dominating the long jump to earn a silver medal in the event.

 

Greaves certainly put on a show in the long jump, setting a personal record and inserting himself third all-time in school history in the event. He leaped to 7.88 meters on his fifth attempt to earn his second place finish and First Team All-American status. He was bested only by Brian Huber from MSU-Moorhead who reached 7.98 meters to win the title.

 

The Barbados native wasn't done yet, as he led the men's 4x100 meter relay team to a 39.93 performance and the fastest preliminary time amongst the top athletes in the country. The team comprised of him, Javier Lopez, Todd Nicholas, and Deon Hope set a time that was good for fifth in Javelina history as the 4x100 meter final will take place at approximately 3:25 p.m. on Saturday, May 26.

 

Greaves competed in the 100 meter dash as well, finishing fourth in his heat with a time of 10.59.

 

The women's 4x100 meter relay team advanced to finals as well, as Deana Richardson, Taylor Roberson, Keandria Taylor, and Teandria Taylor completed the race in 45.64. Their time seeds them sixth heading into Saturday's contest and will compete directly after the culmination of the men's race.

 

In addition to the relay, K. Taylor took eighth in her heat of the 100 meter dash after clocking a 12.03.

 

Johnathon Harper currently sits sixth in the men's decathlon competition after opening up with a 847-point performance in the 100 meter dash. He finished fourth in the event just behind Kodiak Landis of Central Washington University. The long jump resulted in a sixth-place finish adding 757 to his total.

 

He then launched the shot put 12.66 meters taking fifth amongst the field. His point total after the event reached 2251, bumping him up from sixth place to third overall. He then cleared 1.83 meters in the high jump and gained a score of 653.

 

The 400 meter dash was the final event of the day in the decathlon as Harper took fourth, finishing day one up with a total of 3768 for the sixth-place spot.

 

Friday's competition will continue with Richard Cervantes making his debut in the discus to lead the field. LaGae Brigance will take on the high jump, K.Taylor squares off in the 200 meter dash, Robert Downs and Ayman Zahafi will compete in the 800 meter run, and Lopez and Irene Almarcha-Conejero will take on the 110 meter hurdles and the 100 meter hurdles, respectively. Fridays final event will be the men's 4x400 meter relay.

 

Prior to the 10,000 meter run, the second-ranked Javelina men own the fifth-place spot in the team standings with a point total of eight.
